Artwork Description

A pour painting feels like the right medium for water. I can plan the colors, the composition, the starting point, but beyond that it's largely out of my hands. The paint moves where it wants to, settles how it chooses, and the final result is never quite what you imagined. In that way, it mirrors the subject itself. No two waves break the same way. The water disperses, the foam spreads, and the pattern it leaves behind is entirely its own. This painting is as much a product of chance as the wave it depicts.

Artist Bio

Shaya is a self-taught artist based in Newcastle, Australia, originally from the Maldives. Her work focuses on landscapes, primarily ocean-related art, a natural connection to her roots in the Maldives, a nation of islands surrounded by ocean. She works across oils, acrylics, and pour paintings.

Shaya works full-time as a doctor in Newcastle, where she also graduated from medical school. Throughout her studies, art has been a way for her to destress. It's something she has been passionate about since childhood, and she has never given it up, not during medical school, and not while working. For Shaya, painting remains a constant alongside medicine: two very different disciplines, both requiring patience, focus, and attention to detail.
