Artwork Description

This painting has a whimsical, storybook quality with a distinctly Australian heart.

At the centre is a kangaroo with a ranbubctuous joey launching himself into her pouch. She braces for the impact in a lush garden beneath a flowering tree. The scene feels like a relatable moment captured in a hidden sanctuary of the natural world, with soft pink blossoms framing the composition and creating a canopy overhead. The background dissolves into gentle washes of pink and green, giving the work a dreamy, almost enchanted atmosphere.

The palette is warm and inviting. The earthy browns and creams of the kangaroo contrast beautifully against the cool greens of the grass and foliage, while the pink blossoms add a sense of romance and tenderness. The loose, expressive brushwork throughout the flowers and vegetation creates movement and texture, making the garden feel alive and vibrant.

What stands out most is the emotional tone. The joey scrambling into the pouch immediately evokes themes of motherhood, mischief, protection, nurturing, and family. Combined with the blooming garden setting, the painting conveys a sense of growth, safety, and the quiet beauty of nature.

Overall, it feels like a celebration of Australian wildlife through a gentle, fairy-tale lens—warm, nostalgic, and full of affection. It has the kind of charm that would work particularly well in a nursery, family home, or as a gift celebrating motherhood, new beginnings, or a love of Australian nature.

Artist Bio

Shelley set out as an artist to make people feel at ease.

That instinct was forged early, in a childhood that wasn't always gentle, and it quietly shaped every choice she made afterward. The jobs she took. The way she moved through a room. The particular satisfaction of being the person who could walk into a hard moment and make someone's shoulders soften. What started as survival became, over time, something she actively chose and eventually, something she decided to pour into paint.
Shelley's work is joyous, tactile, and hard to miss.
Her art begins where her life always has, with the quiet, deliberate choice to be a breath of fresh air for the people around her. That instinct to nurture has shaped every role she has ever stepped into: disability support, driver examiner, phlebotomist. Her favourite moment, in any room, is the one where someone breathes relief.
She paints that moment.

Raised in the Hunter Valley and painting from a home studio alongside her daughter, Shelley has found deep healing in giving her daughter the childhood every child deserves, learning, in doing so, to nurture without condition. That same energy lives in her work. It is playful, free, and full of joyous movement. She is drawn to subjects that already carry the feeling she wants to give you, the softness of a flower, the openness of the coast, so that the emotion is built in before the brush even touches the canvas.

Shelley came to acrylics after a lifetime of watercolour, oils and a childhood of illustrating her own storybooks. The discovery changed everything. Acrylic gave her the sculptural height of impasto and the soft, drifting quality of watercolour in one extraordinary medium and then she took it somewhere no one on Bluethumb had gone before.

As the family baker, Shelley had always been the one to pull out the piping bag for a birthday cake. One day she pointed it at a canvas. The result, layers of acrylic piped into her signature frosting flower forms, became the foundation of her Sweet Deception collection and a technique entirely her own. There is nothing else like it on this platform.

When her work lives in your home, you'll feel its texture and its warmth. You might catch the scent of a summer garden, or find yourself lost in a bloom made of buttercream. Whatever you feel, it was put there on purpose.
