Hi I’m Shelley Hughes a visual artist based on the beautiful Fleurieu Peninsula on Peramangk & Ngarrindjeri land in South Australia. I paint mainly in acrylics on canvas & design graphic art.
Beginning in realism which came naturally from a young child, I was then drawn to expressionist style works which seemed to allow so much more freedom to experiment with colour & form.
Recent years have seen an outpouring of abstract geometric design ideas inspired by my long-standing appreciation of bold mid-century modern design…whether it be architecture, furniture, fabrics, wallpapers, homewares or fashion.
I love big bold shapes, supergraphics & large colour fields. Over the years I’ve realised a need to be surrounded by these visual stimulations as they tend to lift my mood inextricably!
…this has always been a deciding factor in the subjects I like to paint!
Along side my love for painting, Ive also developed a passion for graphic art & design which allows me to further explore these themes & expand my ideas in new ways…resulting in the production of some large scale printed textiles, archival prints on paper & canvas as well being a great resource of inspiration for future paintings!
Over the last 25 years I have immersed myself in art through study, experimentation & produced many series of work, exhibited in numerous solo & group exhibitions, cafes, restaurants, painting public & private murals & commissions.
From concept development to the finished piece, art for me is both a therapeutic practice & compulsion.
