People gather along the shoreline beneath a melancholy sky, suffused with the soft, nostalgic hue known as millennial pink. For many Australians, this particular shade is instantly familiar—the atmospheric pink produced by backburning during bushfire season. It’s a colour tinged with both loss and anticipation: something fading, something emerging.
This painting captures that poignant in-between—what I believe defines the millennial generation and era. It’s a moment suspended in time: the ending of one story and the trembling promise of another not yet fully formed.
There’s a gentle disorientation here, like déjà vu for the future. A soulscape. We stand on the edge of something we cannot quite name, both comforted and unsettled. It is this mood that inspired the work—a subtle ache, a beauty fleeting and ephemeral.
I painted this piece in one sitting, beside the sea at sunset, working quickly to hold the moment before it passed. The result is a visual meditation on time: earthly, tender, and vibrating at the frequency of millennial pink.
