People congregate on the shoreline beneath a melancholy pink sunset, evoking the spirit of the millennial generation and era.

Australians will recognise this dusky pink at sunset as the atmospheric quality produced by backburning. And so we have a feeling that is poignant when inhabiting such a space; tinged with the sadness of something lost, but with the promise of something new and unknown, something yet to come into being.

I believe it is this poignant sense of an era coming to an end, and a new one about to dawn, that defines the millennial generation and era.

It is an era that has become defined by a singularly melancholy and dusky shade known as “millennial pink”.

In this mood, we feel a sense of nostalgia for something lost that we cannot quite grasp; and a similar feeling about what is yet to unfold. A strange kind of deja vu for the future, when we feel not quite sure of the time and space we inhabit; something like a dream. A soulscape.

I made this picture in one setting at sunset by the sea, and so I worked quickly.

There is the feeling of the ephemeral and fleeting nature of time; a quality of time which feels very gently yet intimately anchored to Earth, and at the “vibration of time” known as millennial pink.
