Artwork Description

Steve is my online ukulele friend. He plays his ukulele on his torn and tatty office chair. I ended up making a cluttered, messy space because I wanted to contrast with the sombre-looking office chair. I repainted Steve's face so many times that I ended up making it into a white-out caricatured image…I wanted to capture a wry expression since he seems to cover some songs that are sort of wry. At the same time, I want to show a slightly playful quality…I know he has a smallish dog which is not the kind in my painting, but these doggies love his uke and him!

The collages in the painting are torn out pieces from an old story book.
If you look hard enough you can see lots of ukuleles hidden in the painting. Also, I have drawn my signature into part of the painting.

I have linked a video of Steve playing his ukulele.

Artist Bio

Joo has a master's degree in fine arts from the Royal Melbourne Institute and Technology. Before moving to Tasmania in 2017, she had taken part in exhibitions regularly in Singapore, where she was born. She paints in acrylics, gouache and water colours. She also loves drawing with dip pens, ink and colouring with colour pencils. Her favourite subject matter are people, who they are, what they do and the clothes they wear. Most of the people she paints are people she has met or known, and some of them are fictional. A lover of children picture book illustrations, Joo also enjoys writing her own stories and poems, which she then makes paintings for. Her style ranges from semi-realistic to quirky and whimsical.
