Artwork Description

A snorkeling visit to the Low Isles, just off Port Douglas inspired this painting. I was sitting at the back of the boat on the return journey and was fascinated by the colours and cross tensions in the flume from the the boat. 'In the Wake' seemed an apt title for the painting, the island disappearing in the Wake of the boat, the day I'd experienced and generally the things that happen in life! I used oil on board for its translucent effect and mesmerizing use of cerulean blue, amongst others.

Artist Bio

Sian Burman is a passionate painter of vast Australian skies, oceans and landscapes, with their intense shimmering light and reflections. It is this fascination and love of her environment that inspires her to paint what she sees, and to share these emotions and images with her audience.
Sian’s semi-abstract fire paintings focus on radiance, colour and movement. Fire is as much an element of the Australian landscape as is the water that surrounds it. Sian frequently uses thick impasto oil paint for these particular paintings and enjoys exploring colour and contrast within the media’s sumptuous luminous properties, enabling her to create startling effects.
In addition to landscape, Sian has an interest in figurative work. Sian’s preferred medium is oil, but she also enjoys working with gouache, acrylic and mixed media. Much of her art practice focuses on the use of colour and light within landscape painting and is influenced greatly by the unique coast of south-west Victoria, where she lives, beautiful Gunditjmara country. Sian originates from the UK, having emigrated some years ago. She grew up on the wild and beautiful coast of West Wales, so a love of the ocean and its rugged environs has never left her.
