This piece belongs to the 'neon_ghetto_flux' collection of works produced in 2022. Titled 'playful' it is an extension of a linocut, based on the ukiyo-e genre, the artist produced many years ago.

"Reflecting upon ukiyo-e (Japanese art meaning ‘floating world’) I’m influenced by the flat perspective, compositional space, flattening of planes, and the abstract approaches to colour common with this genre. Integrating digital design approaches to highlight these aspects, I want to extend the ukiyo-e boundaries, to the point where designs no longer sit with the genre but may reflect upon the past style."

With ukiyo-e as a solid genre to emulate from, along with global influences, cultural diversities, and the technological advancing world, Simon wants audiences to experience ‘the now’.

"I love ukiyo-e. It's interesting. It gives you a real insight into life, society, love, culture, art, etc from a period of time now gone. The creators of ukiyo-e, are master artist in their field – they're to be studied."

Artist Bio

Melbourne-based artist Simon Lovell is a graphic designer with 20 years of experience, having collaborated with both local and international clients. Leveraging his expertise in digital design and influenced by his time spent in Japan, Simon creates vivid imagery inspired by Japanese experiences, ukiyo-e (woodblock prints), and the landscape of his subconscious.

As a contemporary artist, Simon combines digital technology with his traditional fine art education. This mixed-media approach, blending ‘digital & fine art,’ pushes artistic boundaries, resulting in works that are intensely vibrant and bright, or contemplative and subdued. Simon’s creations merge hand-drawn illustrations and linocuts with digital technology and experiences, appealing to a discerning art collector audience and enhancing the authenticity and value of his work.

Recently, Simon was honored with the 2023 Aesop Value Recognition Award in Creativity.
