This piece belongs to the 'neon_ghetto_flux' collection of works. Titled 'playful' it's an extension of a linocut the artist produced.
Reflecting upon ukiyo-e (Japanese art meaning ‘floating world’) the artist is influenced by the flat perspective, compositional space, flattening of planes and the abstract approaches to colour, all common with this genre. Integrating digital design approaches to highlight these aspects, the artist wants to extend the ukiyo-e boundaries.
With ukiyo-e as a solid genre to emulate from, along with global influences, cultural diversities, and the technological advancing world, Simon wants audiences to experience ‘the now’.
"I love ukiyo-e. It's interesting. It gives you a real insight into life, society, love, culture, art, etc from a period of time now gone. The creators of ukiyo-e, are master artist in their field – they're to be studied."
