This piece belongs to the ‘japan’ collection of works. The small collection has a pronounced Japanese influence and tends to stay subdue in nature but strong in spirit. Colour isn't the overall intention here – it's only to support the greater message and meaning. The artist highlights a mix of traditional and modern outputs to create these works.

The artwork 'ragging water' provides an atmosphere of uncertainty. It emphasises nature and the importance of emotion and artistic freedom. It focuses on dark colours and overlays of photography and lino-prints (unreleased by the artist) mixed in a digital environment, to elevate the overall image. The artist presents new ways and fresh ideas. This merging approach has added a new perspective. The viewer has more to reflect on. This is good.

Cleverly, the work isn't boxed by margins or boarders, but allows the white space of the background to be apart of the art, an extension. This provides an overall balance where dark nor light dominates.

Artist Bio

Melbourne-based artist Simon Lovell is a graphic designer with 20 years of experience, having collaborated with both local and international clients. Leveraging his expertise in digital design and influenced by his time spent in Japan, Simon creates vivid imagery inspired by Japanese experiences, ukiyo-e (woodblock prints), and the landscape of his subconscious.

As a contemporary artist, Simon combines digital technology with his traditional fine art education. This mixed-media approach, blending ‘digital & fine art,’ pushes artistic boundaries, resulting in works that are intensely vibrant and bright, or contemplative and subdued. Simon’s creations merge hand-drawn illustrations and linocuts with digital technology and experiences, appealing to a discerning art collector audience and enhancing the authenticity and value of his work.

Recently, Simon was honored with the 2023 Aesop Value Recognition Award in Creativity.
