This work belongs to the 'Japan' collection, a series defined by a subdued presence yet a strong spirit. Colour is not the focus here; instead, it appears only in service of the deeper meaning.

'Red Sun' conveys an atmosphere of strength and quiet power. Dark tones, layered photography, and unreleased lino-prints are interwoven with digital techniques to create a heightened sense of depth. The result offers fresh approaches and perspectives, inviting the viewer into reflection.

At its centre is the transparent red circle—the work’s decisive accent. Simple yet commanding, it has been carefully positioned to balance visibility with presence, allowing the background to breathe. Completing the composition are the artist’s signature drips, thoughtfully placed to add another layer of interpretation.

“This was the first piece in the 'Japan' series. I wanted the audience to clearly recognise my influences—and I believe that comes through.”

Artist Bio

Melbourne-based artist Simon Lovell is a graphic designer with 20 years of experience, having collaborated with both local and international clients. Leveraging his expertise in digital design and influenced by his time spent in Japan, Simon creates vivid imagery inspired by Japanese experiences, ukiyo-e (woodblock prints), and the landscape of his subconscious.

As a contemporary artist, Simon combines digital technology with his traditional fine art education. This mixed-media approach, blending ‘digital & fine art,’ pushes artistic boundaries, resulting in works that are intensely vibrant and bright, or contemplative and subdued. Simon’s creations merge hand-drawn illustrations and linocuts with digital technology and experiences, appealing to a discerning art collector audience and enhancing the authenticity and value of his work.

Recently, Simon was honored with the 2023 Aesop Value Recognition Award in Creativity.
