My passion for Stencil Artwork & Illustration, stylistically, goes back to early adolescence. Being drawn to skateboarding as a teenager, I developed a love for the skateboard art of the late 80’s and early 90’s. Predominantly through works by Jim Phillips, who continues to be a huge influence on my work. The colouring and rendering aesthetic were unique and of a style unto their own. This coupled with a deep appreciation for the Iconographic aesthetic and Utilitarian nature of Stencil art formed the guiding principles toward my work.
Stencil Art is a very refined and methodical process in its application to physical mediums. I find working within these constraints guides my creative process as I’m always aware of the requirements needed to achieve the outcome. Clean lines, clear divisions of colour, detail and the implications that will have on the scale of the work. Elements which I actively push to create something more visually experiential. In contrast, within the realm of digital illustration, I have the capacity to push these elements and create far more detailed compositions to enhance the aesthetic and communicate the narrative.
