I'm a Brisbane-based painter working in oil, acrylic, and mixed media. I trained and worked as an engineer before turning to painting full-time in 2012, and in 2024 my practice shifted from representation to abstraction — treating paint as its own subject, where surface and gesture carry what image once conveyed.
My recent work builds in layers — acrylic, charcoal, ink, and oil pastel — on cradled wooden panels and stretched canvas. I work with a restrained palette, and I like a piece to hold the evidence of how it was made: scraped, reworked surfaces that reward slow looking rather than a single glance.
My work has been exhibited across Australia since 2012, has received several awards, and is held in private collections across Australia, the US, and Europe. You can follow the work in progress on Instagram at @sof.georgiou.art.
