I'm a Brisbane-based Greek-Australian painter working in oil, acrylic and mixed media. I trained and worked as an engineer before becoming a full-time painter in 2012, and the habits of that discipline, drawing, structure and working things out on paper, still shape how I build a picture. In 2024 my art shifted from representation to abstraction, treating paint as its own subject, where surface and gesture carry what image once did.
My recent work is built in layers of acrylic, charcoal, ink and oil pastel on cradled wooden panels and stretched canvas. Each piece begins with sketched line work that stays visible beneath the colour, and I draw back over the top to hold the composition together. I use a restrained palette and want each piece to keep the evidence of its making: scraped, reworked surfaces that reward slow looking rather than a single glance.
I have exhibited across Australia since 2012, and my paintings are held in private collections in Australia, the US and Europe. Follow the work in progress on Instagram: @sof.georgiou.art.
