Alpha 26

Alpha 26 is a mixed media abstract painting, 46 × 60 cm. It was inspired by the look of old Japanese paintings: a warm ochre-yellow ground, a little black and white, and not much else.
Broad dry-brushed black marks sit against soft white sweeps. Stamped dots and a few fine charcoal lines add texture, and two thin grey bars give the eye somewhere to rest. The limited palette keeps it calm, and the yellow gives it warmth in a room.
It suits a living room, study or entry, hung portrait. Signed on the back. Ships ready to hang.

I'm a Brisbane-based painter working in oil, acrylic, and mixed media. I trained and worked as an engineer before turning to painting full-time in 2012, and in 2024 my practice shifted from representation to abstraction — treating paint as its own subject, where surface and gesture carry what image once conveyed.
My recent work builds in layers — acrylic, charcoal, ink, and oil pastel — on cradled wooden panels and stretched canvas. I work with a restrained palette, and I like a piece to hold the evidence of how it was made: scraped, reworked surfaces that reward slow looking rather than a single glance.
