Alpha 27

Alpha 27 is a mixed media abstract painting, 46 × 60 cm. Soft ochre and grey washes sit behind a cluster of small white dots, with heavy black areas pressing in from the edges. Thin ruled lines cross the surface and form rectangles and circles. They give the loose, painted ground a quiet structure.
The palette is warm and limited, so it sits easily in a living room, hallway or study. It suits a home that likes calm, considered abstract work with a bit of tension in it.

I'm a Brisbane-based painter working in oil, acrylic, and mixed media. I trained and worked as an engineer before turning to painting full-time in 2012, and in 2024 my practice shifted from representation to abstraction — treating paint as its own subject, where surface and gesture carry what image once conveyed.
My recent work builds in layers — acrylic, charcoal, ink, and oil pastel — on cradled wooden panels and stretched canvas. I work with a restrained palette, and I like a piece to hold the evidence of how it was made: scraped, reworked surfaces that reward slow looking rather than a single glance.
