Artwork Description

Alpha 28 is built around a large block of strong blue, set against ochre, charcoal and soft grey-blue on a pale ground. Loose white drawn lines run across the colour. Printed textures sit in the corners: a dense black grid at the bottom left and spiral stamps at the top right.
The painting is made in layers. Flat areas of colour are scraped back, covered and drawn into. The blue draws the eye first, and the marks and textures reward a closer look.
Mixed media, 67 × 60 cm. Signed on the back. It would suit a living space or study that needs a confident presence on the wall.

Artist Bio

I'm a Brisbane-based Greek-Australian painter working in oil, acrylic, and mixed media. I trained and worked as an engineer before turning to painting full-time in 2012, and in 2024 my practice shifted from representation to abstraction — treating paint as its own subject, where surface and gesture carry what image once conveyed.
My recent work builds in layers — acrylic, charcoal, ink, and oil pastel — on cradled wooden panels and stretched canvas. I work with a restrained palette, and I like a piece to hold the evidence of how it was made: scraped, reworked surfaces that reward slow looking rather than a single glance.
My work has been exhibited across Australia since 2012, has received several awards, and is held in private collections across Australia, the US, and Europe. You can follow the work in progress on Instagram at @sof.georgiou.art.
