Artwork Description

This is piece forms part of a collection of porcelain objects inspired by rural and industrial structures and are adorned to evoke the natural Australian landscape.

My heart lies with nature and it is here that my art practice begins with experiences of the natural environment which inspires my love of drawing to capture and interpret observations and emotions as abstracted images. Applying these drawings to the hand built ceramic form, observed from rural and industrial environments which have replaced native bushland, intends to evoke nostalgic thoughts and reflections of these structures and the nature that has been lost.

These particular pieces have been inspired by a road trip through the South Australian and Victorian Murray Mallee country. Reflecting on the seemingly unspectacular and mundane beauty of the region through both the built environment and the remainder of the natural landscape. The objects intend to evoke the evolving rural and industrial structures in my surrounding environment, while the decorative surface leaves an impression of natural landscape that has been usurped by human industry.

Artist Bio

Sonya Moyle is a South Australian born Visual Artist. With a background in Graphic Design, she completed a Certificate IV in Visual Art in 2012 in Western Australia and has gone on to complete further studies of a Bachelor of Visual Art, at Adelaide College of the Arts, with a focus on Ceramics and Drawing. She was previously studio tenant at JamFactory, Seppeltsfield for almost 5 years.

Having grown up surrounded predominately by the natural landscape it has left a lasting impression. An exposure to the built environment through work and travel has emphasised the contrast of these environments. Her work explores colour and form to express her personal observations and reactions to these contrasts.

Sonya responds to these observations using the tactile medium of clay and process of making as a form of release or meditation. Drawing techniques referencing earth and landscape inform the decorative surfaces of her ceramic architectural objects and invite the viewer to contemplate and reflect on these differing environments.
