Artwork Description

This painting reflects a thought in the mind. The swan symbolises beauty, but before becoming graceful, it endured hardship as the “ugly duckling.” Its transformation reminds us that beauty often grows through struggle.
The flowing colours express the complexity of the world—full of turmoil, deception, and darkness. In such a world, people often develop different faces and inner armour to survive, while still searching for their true selves, like the swan rising from chaos.

Artist Bio

Soo Swan a storyteller who records what she see and feels through her artworks.

She has been passionate about art since she was young.
When she was a little girl, she always had many dreams.
The dreams were never the same, but they always revolved around the same theme.
In her dreams, she falls into oceans, deep bodies of water or from tall places.
However, every time she is in danger, someone is always there to help her. A pair of helping hands, being rescued by an animal or the scene suddenly shifts from one to another. To her, the scenes seemed so real and she was unable to differentiate between hallucinations and reality.
These eerie experiences influenced many of her later works. She has a strong imagination and likes to create unique artworks.

She studied Interior-design and worked as a designer for many years.
During this time, she had encountered a mentor who encouraged her to explore architecture.
'People appreciate your interior design works when they open the door, but people can see your architecture works without opening the door.’
Now, she would like to open another door -  to let her artwork speak for itself and to show what her heart feels.

She is fascinated by the traditional architectural buildings from her homeland- Peranakan architecture, as well as unique ethnic cultures.

Artist statement
I am a storyteller who records what I see, and what my heart feels through my artworks.
My paintings exude a cheeky and humorous mood. I like to combine elements from different styles, enriching my work with visual rhythm. My unique painting style is characterized by deep tones, prominent features and thick lines. It represents the interpretation of how I observe and experience in the modern world through my eyes.
On the other hand, my art tells the stories of marginalized people; the confusion and struggles that they may have experienced in an unfamiliar environment.
I am on the journey to explore the different realms of art, a never ending, extraordinary journey .
