This image was part of an exhibition in 2023 titled LIGHT BODY. It is a photo of a large sandstone rock, almost twice the size of a person. The rock sits out on an exposed rock platform on the Northern Beaches of Sydney, Australia. Exposed to the elements, you can see in the details how it has been whittled into veins and shapes over centuries by the waves and wind. I was fascinated by this rock for its unusual and natural shape, undisturbed in its place. In the light it looks like a body reclining in the sun.
LIGHT BODY explored the movement that light creates in black and white photography. The title was a nod to the term ‘body of work’, as well as a reference to the literal bodies depicted, whose shapes and movements are illuminated somewhere between the polarities of contrast.
