I'm a contemporary acrylic painter and mixed media sketcher (I do love my sketchbooks). All my life I’ve absorbed ‘mind photographs and their associated emotions from places I’ve travelled to, by or near the sea. My work is inspired from beaches, rocks, pebbles, driftwood, boats, harbour buildings, sky, sea and sand; the colours, shapes and textures that they hold. I have previously explored this theme with recognisable elements in my paintings, now I am choosing more expressive, free and spacious brushstrokes, leading onto more abstract paintings. I work largely with acrylics on canvas using a variety of mediums (to create more transparent layers) and tools to scrape and scratch to provide some extra interest, texture and a history to the work. I always start quickly with loads of freely applied paint in a variety of colours, splashing about, feeling the joy, and then adding liquid to encourage drips, splatters and other marks that make for interest later on.
Painting and creating is where I feel the most free, alive and most like myself. The more I do the more I am drawn into the essence of it. My childhood was often solitary and my earliest memories are of making art; from little clay pots in the garden to painting ‘like mum’ in my mothers studio. My aim is to offer you the viewer long-lasting inspiration through my colour choices, the movement in each piece - and of course how this makes you feel!”
