Nature demonstrates both soft beauty and raw power, calm and chaos, all held in perfect tension so that life can continue. Sophie believes this reflects so accurately the internal world of life, joy and grief. Turning to painting to process events of big emotion in life she seeks to balance these tensions of chaos and calm in her works as well as making visible the internal work of processing grief, practicing mindfulness and the experience of true hope for the future.
Sophie works mainly with acrylic on canvas and prefers the pallet knife for applying layers and visual texture. She works in her home in Sydney sometimes with little ones running under her feet, and other times in the quiet of evening to the hum of the freshly stacked dishwasher.
“Painting is my refuge, a sustaining practice for me as I process life, appreciate creation and find balance in the uncertainty and unexpected tosses and turns of life.”
Sophie is currently working on a few commissions and creating a series of works to be possibly exhibited later in the year.
