Artwork Description

An early career mixed media work on paper, originally created at large scale using gouache, watercolour and pencil. The work is characterised by an intuitive, gestural abstraction, with layered marks and flowing lines building a rhythmic, evolving surface.

This edition of 20 is printed at A1 (59.4 × 84.1 cm), a standard size suited to readily available frames.

The in situ images shown depict the artwork at its original larger scale; this listing is for an A1 print edition.

Artist Bio

Sophie Bullen is a multidisciplinary contemporary artist based in the Nillumbik Shire. Her practice explores the quiet vitality of the natural world, including humus, leaf matter and light filtered through suspended matter.

Her work reflects a spirit of reverence and discovery, grounded in the rural landscape she inhabits. Using oil, natural polymer and raw pigment, Bullen builds and subtracts in layered, subtle gestures, allowing light through and letting the conversation of form speak for itself in abstracted expression.

She is currently undertaking a two-year artist residency at the Dunmoochin Foundation, working from Cliff’s Old Studio.
