Artwork Description

Upper Atmosphere was painted at the beginning of the artist residency at Dunmoochin in 2024. The work came together effortlessly, experienced as a gift to the artist.
Built through layered paint and restrained line work, the composition forms a spacious, suspended field. Lines emphasise and stabilise the emerging forms, while familiar shapes shift into a new configuration. The work invites slow looking, revealing structure and movement through its layers.

Artist Bio

Sophie Bullen is a multidisciplinary contemporary artist based in the Nillumbik Shire. Her practice explores the quiet vitality of the natural world, including humus, leaf matter and light filtered through suspended matter.

Her work reflects a spirit of reverence and discovery, grounded in the rural landscape she inhabits. Using oil, natural polymer and raw pigment, Bullen builds and subtracts in layered, subtle gestures, allowing light through and letting the conversation of form speak for itself in abstracted expression.

She is currently undertaking a two-year artist residency at the Dunmoochin Foundation, working from Cliff’s Old Studio.
