Masked Owl Study I

In Masked Owl Study I, Stephanie was interested in experimenting with texture and brushstrokes. The oil paint is rendered in individual strokes, taking inspiration from Van Gogh’s starry night. The light colours of the masked owl contrast with the dark depths of the night sky and create a sense of moody intrigue. This is the first in a series of paintings exploring owls as a subject.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Stephanie Holm crafts enchanting worlds on small canvases. She is a contemporary artist living and working on Worimi land. Inspired by nature's poetry and the elegance of still life, her paintings breathe life into the ordinary, transporting viewers into a realm where beauty whispers in the delicate strokes of her artistry.

Stephanie Holm lives and works on Worimi land in Forster, NSW. She has been passionate about art since her school days and winning her first art prize, the Godfest Christian Art Prize in 2006. She went on to study Natural History Illustration at the University of Newcastle, which gave her an eye for fine detail, and a continuing interest in learning about and representing the natural world in her art. She received the Margaret Senior Wildlife Illustration Award for her final year portfolio and went on to study Honours. She was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy (Natural History Illustration) in 2017.

Stephanie has also been a Children's Literature Fellow at the State Library of Victoria and authored Wildscapes: An Australian art therapy colouring book, which featured her signature natural history illustrations of Australian flora and fauna. These days she has moved away from strictly illustrative work to combine her love of nature and the luminescence and texture of oil paint to create a series of nature-inspired artworks. She still loves to go on field trips for inspiration, though texture, brush strokes and light are becoming increasingly important in her work.

After spending several years travelling Europe and living in Scotland, followed by a career break to start a family Stephanie is excited to return to the studio as her small children allow. She currently enjoys working in a small to medium scale because it means she can hang more art on her walls.
