Artwork Description

Doubt.2018

This piece explores the inner thoughts,
and uncertainty that underlie all artistic endeavours.

Inspired by the book Art and Fear by Bayles and Orland.
Making art means working in the face of uncertainty
- living with doubt and contradiction.
Making art precipitates self-doubt, stirring deep waters
between what you know you should be, and what you fear you might be.

However, fear that your next work will fail is a normal recurring and
healthy part of making art.
Facing these uncertainties allows the artist to
see clearly what they have done and where to go next.
Our flaws and weaknesses are a source of strength.
Our failed episodes are essential because they inform our progress.
Uncertainty is the prerequisite to progression.

The text which reads (No one will buy this) is hand finished
in a gloss paint and can only properly be seen when the print
is viewed on an angle in the light.
