Artwork Description

Depicting Hillarys Boat Harbour in Perth, Western Australia, this painting captures The Breakwater at a summer dusk. A vivid sunset of oranges, blues, and yellows dissolves into a stylised landscape, creating a striking and immersive focal point.

The work explores the sky as a living, expressive presence. Biomorphic forms and patterned marks convey movement, thought, and emotion, evoking both a stream of conciousness and a sense of life.

Acrylic on canvas.

Artist Bio

Steve Miller is a Western Australian artist whose vibrant paintings explore the connection between landscape, memory and perception. Inspired by the distinctive light, colours and atmosphere of Western Australia and beyond, he creates expressive interpretations of coastal environments, buildings, vast landscapes and dramatic sunsets. Influenced by surrealism and symbolic imagery, Miller has developed a distinctive visual language that combines bold colour, organic forms and flowing black line work. His work reflects the idea that our understanding of place is often complicated and dynamic. He captures feelings and experiences through symbols, silhouettes and abstract forms. Black lines connect and define spaces while rhythmic marks introduce movement and energy. Human figures occasionally appear within dreamlike landscapes blurring the boundaries between people and place. Through colour, symbolism and layered meaning, Miller invites viewers to reflect on their relationship with the Australian landscape, its histories, and the stories, emotions and connections it holds.
