Steve Tierney is a mixed media artist and designer working mainly with collage. His artworks are refined and minimal, generally figurative, and made from just a few images sourced from vintage magazines, photo journals, or original photography. Each of his artworks tells a story, often exploring social issues or personal experiences, shaped by a deep level of thought and self-analysis. His passion for collecting vintage magazines and scavenging for discarded objects, along with his sense of humour, has resulted in a unique aesthetic and vision.
Born in 1976, Steve Tierney grew up in the southern coastal suburbs of Sydney. He studied art and design at Sydney Graphics College and was a professional skateboarder through the 1990’s, at the same time creating artwork for a majority of Australian skateboard companies at the time. Tierney spent over a decade living and exhibiting internationally while based in Mexico, where he managed an artist residency and collaborated with local artists in the city of Oaxaca. He recently returned to Australia to settle with his family on the NSW south coast.
A member of the Sydney Collage Society, Steve’s work has been published in international art journals, and he regularly creates commissioned pieces for foundations, not-for-profits, magazines, online editorials, skateboard brands, and album covers. His work has been exhibited in solo and group shows across the world, including in the USA, Japan, Mexico, and Italy.
