I like the coastal paths, the walks along and behind the dune vegetation, headlands and heathlands. On these walks I'm always seeing the ocean through the maze of vegetation, the flora that forms the wind barrier between the ocean and the inland. Many of my coastal paintings reference this visual experience, the blue or turquoise ocean just glimpsed through the leaves and flowers of the native coastal trees and plants. In this painting titled 'Coastal Banksia' I painted the background in thin oils and used a palette knife with thick paint to capture the foreground banksia.
