Man Monster is a tribute painting to the victims of the Lindt Cafe Siege, Martin Place, Sydney. I used to install signs and graphics for Lindt Cafe so I actually knew Tori Johnson through our business dealings. 2 weeks prior to the devastating incident, I was contracted to remove some existing graphics, then repair and repaint the wall. The work took place after hours so Tori stayed back to assist me and then close the cafe after I was finished.
We talked about many topics while I was working, including family and favourite chocolate flavours. By the end of the evening, Tori put a bag of assorted LINDOR chocolates in my work trolley. Included were all the flavours I had told him my wife and daughter enjoyed the most. Of course, this large bag of chocolates was with compliments, Tori would not accept payment.
Because of Tori Johnson’s kindness and generosity, I will always remember the LINDOR chocolates. I painted the LINDOR chocolates as a metaphor for the victims. I didn’t feel comfortable reaching out to their families and asking for permission to paint a portrait. Besides, I had never met Katrina Dawson. So this artwork was lovingly painted with friendship and compassion in mind. It is dedicated to a genuine hero, a descent and upstanding human being. In a more general sense, this artwork is dedicated to all victims of violent crime and terrorism.

From his early days as a precocious artist, Stuart demonstrated an innate talent for visual storytelling, his adolescence marked by a fascination with fantasy and anatomy that laid the groundwork for his later explorations.

Despite grappling with challenges such as dyslexia and colour blindness, Stuart's ardour for art remained undiminished, propelling him towards a lifelong quest for excellence. His journey led him to complete a Diploma of Fine Arts at Nepean TAFE in 2004 as a mature-age student, earning 11 distinctions, followed by a Bachelor of Fine Arts at COFA (UniNSW) in 2009, where he garnered an additional 8 distinctions.

Stuart's artistic footprint extends across private collections throughout Australia, with notable group exhibitions at esteemed venues such as TAP Art Gallery in 2022 and Blacktown Arts in 2012. Embracing opportunities to engage with diverse artistic communities, Stuart currently shares his expertise by teaching drawing and watercolour at Parramatta Community College. This symbiotic relationship not only broadens his artistic horizons but also fosters meaningful connections within the wider artistic ecosystem, a testament to his commitment to nurturing emerging talent.
