Artwork Description

‘GOLD’ by Sydney-based photographic artist Stuart Miller is a series that considers the tangled relationship between the rawness of humanity and the excess of the manufactured world.

Artist Bio

Stuart Miller (b. 1983) is a Sydney-based artist whose considered approach to concept, composition, crafting of light and technical solution is the hallmark of his practice. This sensibility and touch results in artworks laden with sophisticated imagery and quintessential notions of existence. He has worked as a visual artist and photographer nationally and internationally, committed to working beyond factual documentary photography to compose scenes that bridge alternative realities and reportage. Drawing inspiration from socio-political and material environments to create visual narratives, Stuart’s imagery is as much aesthetically striking as conceptually significant in subject matter. Stuart holds a Bachelor of Design (Photography) from his hometown Canberra.

Stuart’s artwork is held in public collections including the National Portrait Gallery, National Gallery of Victoria, Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art, and the Australian War Memorial.

Stuart has notably exhibited in the National Photographic Portrait Prize, National Portrait Gallery (2021, 2018, 2010), Civilization: The Way We Live Now, National Gallery of Victoria (2019), Océanie, Musée du quai Branly Jacques Chirac, Paris (2019), ‘GOLD’ Black Eye Gallery, Sydney (2016), Precarious Nature, The Centre of Contemporary Art (CoCA), Christchurch in New Zealand (2016), The 8th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (APT 8) Queensland Art Gallery | GoMA, Brisbane (2015).
