Sue is an abstract artist who has had a deep love of art from a young age and has a background in painting, graphic art, and design from The Johannesburg School of Art.
Sue has developed an art style that showcases her passion for experimenting with new techniques and subjects.
Her exposure to abstract painting marked a turning point in her approach to art and led her to fully explore texture in her work. Sue develops her paintings in multiple layers, each one carrying its own story through texture and mood that build history into the work. Resulting in solid heavy areas of texture and fine marks that give depth to the completed painting.
Sue’s engagement with each creation is unique, resulting in truly one-of-a-kind original abstract artwork.
She draws inspiration from a wide range of sources, including nature and personal experiences. Sue’s works to create pieces that are meaningful and invite exploration. Whether working in oil paint, acrylic, or mixed media, Sue brings her unique vision to each piece, resulting in works that are rich in depth and energy.
Layered Narrative:
I seek to create a visual language that resonates on an emotional level. Each layer informs the next in an organic, evolving process.
The initial stages are marked by bold and energetic areas of colour, which gradually give way to a more refined composition. This layering technique contributes to the depth and complexity of the final piece.
My work is an intuitive process that unfolds in real-time as I paint, giving rise to unexpected and profound connections that shape the story within the artwork as it emerges.
I use oil paint when I need time to explore an idea and acrylic paint when the inspiration is pouring out of me too fast to wait for the paint to dry. Both mediums enable me to create multiple thick layers that can be carved back to excavate unexpected areas of interest. When my art craves more than colour and texture, I introduce collage elements to deepen the narrative.
