Following the restrictions of Covid, it seems that Aussies have a renewed appetite for travel. I wanted to capture the feeling of “getting away from it all” by exploring the experience of taking off down the road in an unplanned way and exposing oneself to the length and breadth of the country: in essence capturing a piece of the range of environments Australia has to offer. It’s an immense island nation with a pallet of colours and shapes offered to the viewer tempered by weather from the snows and wild weather of the south to inland desert country, pockets of wild water, and beaches all along the eastern sea board.
The series is my appreciation of the natural world in our Australia, through the lense of travelling hands on, so to speak, on the Australian tradition of a camping road trip.
I have used colour to underscore the variation and range available to us should we take to the road and explore. You will also notice a nod to surrealism here and there.
I have utilised ink in low key, mid key and high key ranges in the smaller works. Acrylic on canvas I kept for the larger canvas offerings.
