Artwork Description

Inspired by a quiet drive through the rolling countryside of the Macedon Ranges, this watercolour painting captures the tranquil essence of rural Australia at dusk. A modest barn with a red tin roof rests gently amidst golden paddocks and scattered trees, while the vast sky above transitions from soft twilight to a starlit veil. In the foreground, a cluster of rounded rocks sits gently in the earth, grounding the landscape and adding a raw, textural contrast to the softness of the surrounding fields. This piece invites viewers to slow down and reconnect with the stillness and wide-open beauty of the Australian countryside.

Artist Bio

I’m Surbhi Tayal, a watercolour artist based in Melbourne, Australia. My art journey began during the COVID lockdowns, when I picked up a paintbrush simply to escape the boredom—and then never quite put it down. Watercolours quickly won me over with their charm, unpredictability, and quiet elegance, and now painting has become a central part of my everyday life.

I’ve always been artistic by nature. I spent my younger years in the Himalayan region of India, where the beauty of the natural world was all around me—majestic mountains, misty forests, and vibrant wildflowers were my everyday companions.

Now living in Melbourne, I’m constantly inspired by the city’s ever-changing skies, charming coastlines, lush green pockets, and peaceful countryside just a drive away. Whether it’s the wild ocean blues along the Great Ocean Road or the soft afternoon light over the Dandenongs, Melbourne has no shortage of moods and colours to offer. It’s a beautiful place to live and an even better one to paint.

I enjoy taking pictures of scenery, plants, and flowers during walks or travels, and later turning those moments into paintings. My home studio is where the magic happens—along with a fair amount of paint-splattered clothes, half-finished sketches, and cold cups of tea. If you’re curious to see the world through my eyes (and paint palette), you're warmly invited to explore my work and see the world as I do—through the fluid, glowing lens of watercolour.
