Artwork Description

Light transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary. When you see the light in something, you discover it's beauty.

To me, watercolour painting is about capturing the light, letting it shine. Both the light on the subject and the light reflecting off the paper through the paint. This reveals the beauty in the everyday.

It was a beautiful day of sunshine and colour when I noticed these lily pads. I loved the shapes and the way the sun danced off the leaves but also shone through the flowers. I wanted to capture that sense of colour and light in this painting - Dancing in the Light.

I used masking fluid to preserve the whites of the lily pads and then masked again after the first wash to create the variegated patterns. I wanted to contrast the light, colour and pattern on the leaves with the murky depths of the water which has layers of granulating paint. The colours are a response to the emotion of that moment, the dazzling light and colour all around me, rather than a literal representation.

Please note: this work is on paper and as it is should be framed under glass. It will fit a standard 30cm (12 inch) square frame.

I can also finish this with a varnish and mount on a board so it doesn't have to be displayed under glass if you prefer for an extra fee.
