"Hope" Rainbow Lorikeet was created after several months of neuroscience study for CRPS in 2016. Susan wanted to show her struggle to find the "light at the end of the tunnel" and showed this bird flying upwards to freedom. Canberra has a 2 year waiting period for pain treatment, thus the artist sought help online through NOI- Explain Pain is Complex, as opiate prescriptions like Tramadol actually increase pain so swelling and discoloration occur. The artist wanted to see if Art Therapy could help heal severe pain, for alternative medicine had helped her when reacting to surgical gloves once before- it did and Susan is now a full time artist creating contemporary fine art with acrylics and airbrush on stretched canvas and loving the networking involved in art marketing. This artwork is for all those in Pain- it gives you Hope for neuroplasticity is more understood today (a tip read Norman Doidges book!) than in the days CRPS was called RSD and for something that tops the McGills chart of Pain there is a solution that avoids the addiction problems in today's society with prescription medication. Of note is the love of Australian birds which started in Africa with her two cockatoos and then continued with her husband and Susan's wildlife bird photography in Canberra, Australia. Her understanding of nociceptors, dorsal spine, and frontal lobe pain pathways comes from 31 years as a medical scientist specialising in cytology although it was brain and other cancers that she helped diagnose in the laboratory. Pain is a social, psychological and physical problem. It is easy to understand not being able to walk without stabbing pain is painful but understanding that "no talking- no moving" policies are detrimental to health in workplaces and lead to DVT and the fact that deeming prevention of cervical cancer in tried and tested means is not cost effective in Australia anymore was also a painful realisation as she watched the palliative care hospitals being built in preparation for those that will be affected. The Art world connects people, it allows communication and inspiration and is something that is important in communities- the artist believes that STEAM is as important as STEM having done Art in High school and she used these skills in cytology as well. Finding mindfulness and positive psychology has also benefited Susan and is something she believes in now for there is much greed she has witnessed in her life. "Hope" Rainbow Lorikeet is there for so much more than just a beautiful bird painting. This artwork has been published in Spotlight Contemporary ART Magazine, Circle Foundation Issue 6, June 2018 with many Thanks going to Myrina and Anna for their super work, it also featured on Renee's The Healing Power of Arts & Artists, Anniversary celebration Online exhibition, Manhattan Arts International 22 March 2018, which is well worth a look for other super stories involving the arts and healing.
