Red-rumped Parakeets are grass seed-eating birds found mainly in long grass in groups. The males are green, grey, have bright yellow chests and a single patch of red on their rumps. The females have a more neutral colour. This is why you only notice them when bush walking when they fly in flocks into the air or if you lucky you may spot the red before you get too close and you can then approach more slowly. This little Parakeet or Parrot is perched on a fence ready to fly off at the slightest indication of danger for he has seen us first.
