In this striking reimagining of the Odyssey’s most enigmatic sorceress, Circe is depicted not merely as a witch, but as a cosmic force of nature. Standing at the intersection of the wild woods and the wine-dark sea, she holds a golden bowl that pours forth a liquid metamorphosis. This is the moment of Pharmakeia—the literal refraction of a goddess’s will into the physical world.
Visual Analysis
The artwork is a masterclass in ornamental complexity, drawing heavily from the stained-glass aesthetics of the Belle Époque and the mosaic traditions of Byzantium.
• The Dual Nature: The upper composition features the soft, illustrative realism of a Pre-Raphaelite muse, while the lower half dissolves into a rhythmic explosion of tessellated patterns.
• The Peacock Motif: Her gown, adorned with "hundred-eyed" peacock feathers, suggests the watchful gaze of Argus and Circe’s own terrifying foresight.
• The Elements: To her left, a serpentine creature emerges from earth-toned mosaics; to her right, a celestial sea-beast swirls in cerulean waves, representing her dominion over the beasts of both land and water.
