Studying these gumnuts in a vase during self-isolation, gave me time to take note of the shapes and textures as the blossoms dropped away. I focused closely on this piece of nature whilst inside the house and chose to avoid some of the overload of frightening details appearing daily in the news. Although happy enough with my original interpretation, after sitting with it for a couple of weeks, I completely reworked this one day, by using a single large bristle brush to make myself manipulate the paint to get as much texture and strength as possible to convey a more optimistic outlook.

Artwork Description
Artist Bio
Coming from a performance & theatrical costume background, Suzy uses her knowledge of colours to explore new techniques in painting and especially mixed media.
Allowing the scene to dictate the technique or method used to capture it, Suzy's work often ranges between naturalistic and impressionistic.
Many of her pieces explore textures and shapes in the details of nature, and the way we interact with it. In particular, she has been exploring how we pass through the surface of a scene - the notion of being IN but not OF the landscape.
In 2020, Suzy used her time in isolation to complete new works for a solo exhibition 'SOJOURN'. βIt was great fun to tell my stories and share in the memories my paintings evoked in the visitors.β
Since 2021, Suzy has also been using cold wax medium & oil paint, to build up a depth of layers in her works, often excavating to reveal underlying colours.
Suzy continues to be inspired by our vibrant Australian contemporary art scene to keep exploring acrylics, cold wax, oil paints, oil pastels, acrylic inks, charcoal and collage both in the studio and en plein air.
