Talisha McCann is a new artist based in Flagstone, Queensland. I moved here in 2025, after spending six years in Apollo Bay, Victoria, along the breathtaking Great Ocean Road. Before that, I grew up on the picturesque Mornington Peninsula in Victoria.
Creativity has always been a part of my life, influenced by a family deeply involved in musical theatre. My mother, a dance teacher whose footsteps I followed for 18 years teaching dance myself, taught me the joy of expression. My grandfather was not only an artist, working with pastels and oils, but also a master set builder for theatre. My grandmother, a skilled seamstress, and my mother both crafted stunning stage costumes, embedding in me a love for the arts.
Although I enjoyed art growing up, it wasn't until after my son was born in 2020, while living in Apollo Bay, that I fully embraced my artistic side. I opened an art shop in the town called Terra Craft. This venture allowed me to reconnect with art, providing a venue for my works and hosting creative workshops for children during school holidays. Additionally, I introduced popular "paint and sip" classes for adults and catered to numerous private events.
My artistic style is characterized by vibrant, bright colors; I often use fluorescent hues as an underlayer to add depth and vibrancy to my paintings. My subjects often include birds, particularly the blue fairy wrens, which are plentiful in Apollo Bay and rocky and mountain landscapes. My preferred mediums are acrylics, where I relish the process of layering. However, alcohol inks captivate me the most for their spontaneity and unpredictability.
As I settle into life in Queensland, I'm excited about the new inspirations and directions my art will take. Currently, I am pursuing a Bachelor in Primary Education with the aim of becoming an art teacher, eager to share my passion and skills with the next generation.
