Historically there were many shipwrecks around King Island situated in the Bass Straight between Tasmania and mainland Australia. Huge seas left many shipwrecked even though quite close to land. This painting was inspired by this knowledge that those on board would have seen the island but not knowing if they would reach it or not right at the end of their long journeys.
