I first visited the idea of painting a snake 4 years ago but as soon as I researched reference images and saw the amount of detail involved in painting a snake I was instantly turned off. In August 2022 I revisited the idea as I felt more confident in my practice and took on the challenge.


Working in sections, pieces of this painting came to life. Like most of my artwork, Monotone (black and white) is a favourite and this snake painting wasn’t going to be the exception.


I wanted the snake to blend into the black background in the shadows. I wanted the black negative space around the snake to be just as important as the snake itself.
