Artwork Description

Acrylic on canvas, stretched and ready to hang.

Signed on the back.

Many years ago, when I was renting a house for the first time, I happened to pick up a broken-off zygocactus segment from the ground (at Bunnings!), brought it home, shoved it in some dirt in a pot, and gave it a good firm ignoring. This was, sadly, my gardening style at the time!

However, that little segment propogated. And grew. And grew and grew. That zygocactus has moved with me for decades, and has never failed to completely cover itself in flowers twice a year. It is bombproof, and its grandchildren and great-grandchildren (?) have been propogated and gifted to friends and family for many years as well.

As the title suggests, it now is in desperate need of repotting, but I wanted to capture it one last time in its original turquoise pot, and with its gnarled compressed beautiful structure in place (...and also in case this is the thing that finally kills it!).

Sometimes I think my Zygo is like my version of the ravens at the Tower of London - as long as it is present and prospering, then so am I.

This painting uses heavy dimensional acrylic with pops of fluro pink to make those alien flowers pop. The texture is delicious, as you can see from the detail shot.
