My name is Teresa Small, and I am a practising artist and art teacher. Growing up in the Hills Shire of Sydney, my journey in art began at age 12, when I began painting. At age 16, I sold my first artwork at the Cumberland Art Show, and I have been exhibiting my paintings and taking commissions ever since. Creating art is something I have always loved, and sharing beautiful moments with others is something by which I feel deeply impassioned. Making art is a freeing, meditative and satisfying process, from choosing the subject matter to signing the finished work.
Oil paint is my preferred medium and I take a classical approach to my work, which involves using many layers of thinned paint. I find the atmospheric effects of light and colour fascinating to explore, through my choice of colours and techniques; when the sunlight is filtered through a shroud of mist, the radiant glow that illuminates a landscape on a summer afternoon, or those magical twilight moments at dusk or dawn, when the sky shows its dazzling rainbow of colours. Landscapes are undoubtedly my subject of choice. While I am painting, I feel a sublime sense of creation, and while my colours and brush marks build the scene, I feel present in the moment I am capturing.
