Gnome Study (after Poortvliet)

For this one I have used the front cover image of the "Gnomes" book but have painted it in flat areas of colour using a limited palette of complementary blue and orange. I have always found the image intriguing because it shows the gnome from two different points of view at the same time or does it? Maybe there are 2 gnomes?

I started by projecting the image onto the canvas to see if I could get a screen print-like effect but was unsatisfied with the way it was turning out so I changed tack. Because of the small scale it was difficult to get the paint to replicate the flat colour of a screen print, particularly in the more detailed areas.

I simplified and abstracted the image into defined areas of colour and used line and/or stippling to convey a sense of volume in detailed areas like the gnome's beard and boots. I also gave the gnome a haircut and changed the face around the eyes because it was looking a bit serious and stern in the original.

I am fascinated by discovering how images and paintings are actually made, particularly the traditional craft of oil painting but
I also like experimenting with different ways of making paintings which includes using digital technology and trying out alternative media.

My artwork often blends usually discrete subjects, idioms and genres and I am often drawn to subjects which had a powerful impact on my imagination when I was a kid.

I often employ "found" or rediscovered imagery and try to re-contextualise it. The goal is to make images that are conduits to an experience of resonance for the viewer.
I use professional quality paints, surfaces, mediums and varnishes to ensure the works are permanent and stable.
