Artwork Description

Reproduction Print on paper

Signed and numbered on the front.

Commedia is the result of a recent collaboration between Throwaway and Australian comedian, Mark Samual Bonanno.

This piece uses traditional styling and references Italy's Commedia Dell'arte to explore identity in modern Australia. The original 100 x 120 cm artwork is intended to form Throwaway's 2022 Archibald Prize entry and will be held by the artist until at least mid-2022.

While the original acrylic on canvas painting is currently unavailable for purchase, a limited edition run of numbered prints have been prepared for sale. The printed area is 29.7cm x 35.6cm and it is professionally printed on a sheet of A3+ fine art 310 gsm paper.

The print will be sold unframed and will arrive rolled in a mailing tube. Framing options are available from Bluethumb, and on request, the artist can also provide bespoke framing options prior to leaving the studio. Two styles of frame and mount have been presented in the gallery as examples - modern black and 'traditional' gold.

Jack Post stands slouched over slightly while glaring off to the middle distance. His expression sits somewhere between distracted and resentful.

He is dressed as Batman’s Robin, in a typical 1960s camp Robin costume, complete with tights, leather gloves and a long cape.

Smoke fills the bottom of the portrait.Madonna and the Child depicts a young woman, dressed in robes, resembling the Virgin Mary. She is sitting on the ground and her head is illuminated by a circular halo, similar to those seen in religious images of Madonna. Rather than looking over an infant Jesus, this version of the Virgin Mary is gazing over a levitating metallic crib containing Baby Yoda.A young woman sits in a dark shallow space, an intimate setting that draws the viewer's attention exclusively on her. She faces away from the viewer, but looks back over her left shoulder.

A large ear spacer (or tunnel) is visible in her left earlobe. Her hair is cut very short on one side of her head, and her blonde hair is flipped over the right side of her head. This painting features a beautiful nude female as she slowly and peacefully sinks. The subject’s arm features an anchor tattoo. Bubbles appear to move toward the surface as she sinks.

This piece is painted on a very tall canvas, and is in portrait format, which emphasises the verticality and gravity of the subject’s movement.
