As one of the largest open spaces in the Melbourne CBD, the forecourt of the State Library of Victoria is a magnet for people. Especially on a sunny day. The combination of colourful portico banners, people enjoying the lawn, assorted bikes and a passing hi-vis tradie combined to create what I felt was a very Melbourne scene.β I omitted all the sharp lines and detail in the painting process resulting in an image as if seen through squinting eyes or an unfocused camera. I wanted the painting to be vaguely familiar and feel like Melbourne without being too obviously so. The end result is more like a memory than a snapshot in time..
