Mixed Media on paper, ready to hang.

Guys on Grindr go on and on and on and on about needing a ‘Clear Face Pic’ but usually they have pictures of their torsos as display pictures and have used ‘there’ incorrectly somewhere in the ‘About Me’ section. It reminds me of listening to my mum and her friends talking about other super-gay, mega-flamboyant little boys who were in close proximity to me. Images of Purses falling out of mouthes and terms like ‘petal’ where thrown around. It made me feel kind of sick. It was all dripping with a particular type of condescension which kind of matches that of f*ckbois on Grindr in close proximity to me. This piece is about collective trauma... and then Covid happened and the symbology in the work took on a whole new meaning.

All art by Tom Christophersen

A portrait of a moustachioed, androgynous figure’s disembodied head on a black background. The figure wears elaborate drag makeup which features green skin and white swirling eyeliner. The figure wears an EarPod and has two gold sleepers in their ear.A blue-hued portrait of actor Patricia Arquette as Alice Wakefield from Lynch’s ‘LOST HIGHWAY’. A plume of smoke curls from the figures’ disembodied head which appears on a black background. The work is float mounted on blue Chinese silk and framed in a gold timber frame featuring a decorative leaf motif.A portrait of a bust of Leigh Bowery, who sports a painted face with huge red lips, orange cheeks and highlights and pink eye shadows. Blue candle wax drips down the figures bald head creating the illusion of bizarre looking hair. The artist Michael Simms stands in front of a creased fabric background with a thick black cable spilling out of his mouth. The cable appears to be connected to something out of frame. Halfway down the piece the drawing appears to fragment into a digital glitch, mirroring that of a scanned image which has been removed half way through scanning.
