Artwork Description

Bold, intense and impossible to ignore, Brain Wash feels like an explosion of thought, energy and emotion unfolding across the canvas.

Dominated by deep blues, teals and flashes of white and violet, the painting radiates outward from a powerful central form, creating a sense of impact, movement and release. The composition has an almost cosmic quality, as though something is bursting open, expanding or transforming before our eyes.

The title adds a provocative edge. Brain Wash can suggest influence, control, overload or even the attempt to clear away mental clutter and start again. That tension gives the painting its intrigue. Is this a moment of pressure and chaos, or a kind of awakening?

There is a raw energy in the brushwork, balanced by the richness of colour and the depth created through the darker surrounding tones. The result is a painting that feels both turbulent and hypnotic.

Brain Wash invites the viewer to lose themselves in its energy and decide for themselves whether they are witnessing confusion, clarity or something in between.

Artist Bio

Tony Grima is a Sydney-based contemporary artist with a studio near the beautiful Blue Mountains and Nepean River. His paintings have found their way into private collections across Australia, the United States, Germany, France, Spain and the Middle East.

Tony's interest in art began at an early age, initially through drawing cartoons and caricatures, including illustrating his high school newspaper. He later explored other creative outlets, including spray painting murals on panel vans, and has also enjoyed a lifelong involvement in music, performing in several bands over the years.

Working predominantly with oils and acrylics, often incorporating mixed media, Tony's paintings reflect his enjoyment of colour, texture, movement and the freedom of abstract expression. His work ranges from bold, energetic compositions to more atmospheric abstractions and interpretations of the landscape.

His approach to painting is largely intuitive. Sometimes an idea is inspired by something he has seen, read or experienced. At other times, it begins simply with the urge to put paint on canvas and see what develops. As a painting progresses, ideas evolve, layers are added, textures emerge and colour combinations are explored. A painting may change direction several times before Tony reaches a point where it simply looks and feels right.

Rather than being confined to a particular style or predetermined outcome, Tony enjoys the freedom to experiment and discover new possibilities through the creative process.

Ultimately, he hopes his paintings invite people to pause, explore and find their own meaning in what they see, whether that brings a smile, sparks curiosity or encourages a moment of reflection.
