Artwork Description

A vibrant underwater world, or perhaps something from an entirely different universe.

Squid is an energetic abstract diptych that brings together electric blues, deep indigos, rich burgundy and striking flashes of orange. Against a dark, atmospheric background, curious circular forms, delicate markings and fragmented shapes appear to float, drift and interact across the two canvases.

There is something wonderfully playful about the composition. The scattered orange forms resemble strange little creatures, perhaps watching, communicating or simply going about their business in a world of their own.

The diptych format allows the composition to unfold across two panels, creating a sense of movement and continuity while encouraging the eye to wander between the many intriguing details.

Is it an underwater gathering, a microscopic world or an imagined universe populated by mysterious creatures?

Squid offers no particular explanation. Bold, quirky and full of character, it invites the viewer to dive in, explore the unexpected and enjoy the wonderful possibilities of imagination.

Artist Bio

Tony Grima is a Sydney-based contemporary artist with a studio near the beautiful Blue Mountains and Nepean River. His paintings have found their way into private collections across Australia, the United States, Germany, France, Spain and the Middle East.

Tony's interest in art began at an early age, initially through drawing cartoons and caricatures, including illustrating his high school newspaper. He later explored other creative outlets, including spray painting murals on panel vans, and has also enjoyed a lifelong involvement in music, performing in several bands over the years.

Working predominantly with oils and acrylics, often incorporating mixed media, Tony's paintings reflect his enjoyment of colour, texture, movement and the freedom of abstract expression. His work ranges from bold, energetic compositions to more atmospheric abstractions and interpretations of the landscape.

His approach to painting is largely intuitive. Sometimes an idea is inspired by something he has seen, read or experienced. At other times, it begins simply with the urge to put paint on canvas and see what develops. As a painting progresses, ideas evolve, layers are added, textures emerge and colour combinations are explored. A painting may change direction several times before Tony reaches a point where it simply looks and feels right.

Rather than being confined to a particular style or predetermined outcome, Tony enjoys the freedom to experiment and discover new possibilities through the creative process.

Ultimately, he hopes his paintings invite people to pause, explore and find their own meaning in what they see, whether that brings a smile, sparks curiosity or encourages a moment of reflection.
