Artwork Description

"Trojan Horse 2", watercolour, 76 x 56 cm
This is the last painting (from the series of four) all based on a marble of the head of the horse of Selene, from the Parthenon Frieze (now in British Museum in London).
The horse of Selene (Greek Goddess of the Night and Moon) itself was carved from Pentelic marble, and has been attributed to Phidias, one of the great sculptors of the Classical Age.
As the horse comes to the end of its journey, its eyes bulging, its nostrils flared and its mouth gaping and panting, with the muscles and veins in its face expertly rendered, encapsulating the animal’s exhaustion in its effort to pull the moon across the sky.
This is perhaps the most famous and best loved of all the sculptures of the Parthenon. It captures the very essence of the stress felt by a beast that has spent the night drawing the chariot of the Moon across the sky.
These watercolours are dedicated to the genius sculptor, most likely Phidias (flourished c. 490–430 bc)
Painted on Arches 300 grams all cotton paper. It has about 20mm unpainted border, which can make nice feature for float framing, exposing deckled edges of paper.
It will be rolled and posted in hard tube.

Artwork on this site is in Impressionistic style, mostly without pencil sketch or detailed preparation. Painted directly with the brush creating fresh and loose feel. Almost all places painted were visited by the artist.
Some were painted on actual location and others after the sketches or photos taken on the site.
I have another Blue Thumb page ( Tony Belobrajdic )- artworks painted in a very different styles, using human body as a main subject ( portraits, nudes and animals using mostly oils and acrylics on canvas or wood, watercolours on paper and some etchings)
Thank you for the visit.
